Needs Assessment Report

Understanding the needs of kinship carers and the children they care for is a critical part of the EU Kinship Carers Project.

The report provides an overview of the needs of this group based on interviews with over 180 carers in 7 European countries.

It draws conclusions that will be used by partners on the project to develop resources which are intended to protect children and young people in these placements from the harms that drugs may cause.

Literature Review

In order for our project to understand the evidence that has already been accumulated on meeting the needs of kinship carers and the children they care for we commisioned a review of the literature in this area.

The paper is structured in five parts.

The first offers an overview of the issues for kinship carers and what the literature can tell us about kinship care in a number of countries. The second deals with the needs of kinship care providers.  The third with children‘s needs. The fourth explores findings that could help kinship carers to raise healthy children. Finally, we outline the key findings from the review and make recommendations for action.

Literature Review – Update

This paper provides a short update to the literature review (below) commissioned as part of this project.

The paper is structured in six parts. The first offers an overview of the scale of kinship care. The second deals with the motivation of kinship care providers. The third looks to compare kinship care with other placement types. The fourth explores findings about what happens when parents are incarcerated. The fifth is a section on removing children from maltreatment and the final section looks at meeting the needs of kinship carers and the children they look after.

Key Findings Report

This report brings together the key, trans-national, learning acquired by the project; drawing on a comprehensive needs assessment, an international literature review, and the experience of each of our partners in developing and piloting a resource aimed at carers, the children in their care and those professionals that work with them.

It sets out the key findings from the project and makes recommendations for action.

Training Resource

One of the key findings from our project has been that the relationship between kinship carers and professionals is very important for carers.  If it works well then the benefits to kinship carers and the children in their care can be immense.  When it is not working the carers told us that they feel like negelected, taken for granted and sometimes intimidated.

This training resource is our attempt to help professionals to understand some of the circumstances that carers have told us affect their lives.

Senarios

Working with kinship carers we have produced a number of senarios that can be used as part of the training session.
